I'm right of course, when I say that Football will ALWAYS be more popular in these parts..... :D  |
Soccer has more children playing it in America for 2 reasons.....1) Girls are allowed to play it and there are a lot of scholarships available to women (Proposition 8 is it?); And 2) Many parents, me included, and my parents before me, push their kids to soccer over football due to the much higher propensity for permanent injury and catastrophic injury. My father pushed me to soccer because he destroyed his 1 knee in high school football, and the other in college football (this was long before arthroscopic knee surgery, it was major back then)....he hoped I would avoid the knife in soccer....of course that did not work. My reasons for trying to steer my kids to soccer are 2 fold....I can coach soccer, and the more I read about the debilitations that former players face, mentally and physically from the punishment they took on the field the more I want my kids in the stands cheering on the football team.
But soccer will never be "more popular" than football or baseball. Every player I used to play with in high school, but one, is an Eagles fan, and could care less about any soccer team with the exception of the ones their little children play on. I see many of these guys at the high school football games, along with about a thousand others, each and every Friday, home or away. At the home soccer games, also at night, same stadium, I see me, my 2 kids, and about 40 parents, and nothing else. That surprised me, because when I played 18 years ago there were hundreds. So despite the fact that not a single player from my old team would make todays high school team (including me, and I was all state....the kids today are way better....better trained, perhaps more dedicated, just better), the sport seems less popular. And Downingtown has always been a strong soccer town. Always ranked in the state, this year the girls were ranked in the top 10 in the country. And zero interest.
No, soccer is not more popular. Don't mistake populated for popular. Soccer players do not always grow up to be soccer fans. The only professional game I have seen as an adult, or been interested to see, was USA vs Russia at Franklin Field in 1989....and USA won 4-3 I think, but that was more about beating the damn Commie Bastards (even though the Berlin Wall had already fallen, or was about to). _________________
